The Next 90

You didn't get hiredto fight fires.

The next 90 days are going to happen regardless. The question is what you do with yours.

The Next 90 is an executive coaching program for finance and analytics leaders who are done being buried by their own operations.

Built by a former CFO who has been in your seat.

You know what good looks like. You are too deep in the grind to get there.

Every quarter you tell yourself next quarter will be different. It isn't.

Your close takes too long. Your team spends half their time on manual work that should not require a human.

You have a high pain tolerance for dysfunction. You have gone nose-blind to how bad it has gotten.

The problem isn't your effort. It's your system.

What is The Next 90?

An 8-week methodology built for finance and analytics leaders who are done being reactive. You start with the hardest question first: if you had to train your replacement in two weeks, what would you tell them? That answer becomes your roadmap.

From there you move through diagnostic reset, real process work, and deliberate use of AI on a deliverable from your actual job, alongside the habits and narratives that make the change stick. You leave with a working system, board-ready clarity on how you run finance, and a new operating identity.

Why 8 weeks and not 12? The first 60 days build the foundation and deploy the system. The last 30 are yours to run it in the real world. The program ends. The operating system doesn't.

Phase 1: Foundation

  • Reckoning. The million-dollar backfill question. Map every skeleton, every workaround, every piece of duct tape in your current operation.
  • Reset. Establish your baseline. Where are you starting from, and where do you actually want to be? No wishful thinking.
  • Influence Map. Identify who controls the levers that matter. Who approves budget. Who blocks change. Who is already an ally.
  • Absurd Question. Ask the questions you have been too busy to ask. Why does the close take two weeks? Why can't it take two days? What would happen if you changed everything?

Phase 2: Deployment

  • Build. Pick your first tech debt snowball target. One manual process. One real win. Use AI and other tools to build a replacement that lasts.
  • Communicate. Learn to pitch the math, not the problem. Frame operational improvements in language that gets budget approved and buys you runway.
  • Lock In. Make the change stick. Documentation, handoffs, and systems that survive without you standing over them.
  • Own It. The last 30 days are yours. Run the new system in the real world. Prove it works. Build the case for the next domino.

Why listen to Matt

Matt is a former CFO who has run finance and analytics teams through multiple growth stages, both buy side and sell side, and worked inside businesses from startup through multi-billion-dollar revenue operations. He has personally managed and rebuilt financial close processes, reporting infrastructure, and analytical operations. He has lived The Next 90 several times in his own career and decided to turn it into a methodology built through experience.

He is the author of The Art of Analytics and is writing Surviving the Hairball. He writes for tens of thousands of finance and analytics professionals through the Excel Daily newsletter. He built and runs Excel 4 Academy, the structured Excel program for finance operators. The point is simple: he has been in your chair. He knows what breaks because he broke it and rebuilt it himself.

Two ways to work with me. One outcome.

Pick the path that matches how you learn and how much structure you want.

Getting this approved is easier than you think. If you spend your days approving other people's development budgets, it is time to approve your own. We can help you frame this as an operational investment, not a personal expense. Ask about our reimbursement letter template.

Is this for me?

Built for

Mid-career finance leaders. People who are already in the room and need to show up differently in it.

People who are tired of telling themselves next quarter will be different. It will not be. Not without a system.

Earlier in your career and still want in: the methodology works at any level. The frameworks, the exercises, and the AI tools translate. What's specifically designed for senior leaders is the board-narrative work and the compensation/promotion framing in Weeks 6 and 8. You'll still get value, just know what you're signing up for.

This is not for

  • Analysts looking for Excel or AI tutorials (that's Excel 4 Academy)
  • People who want someone else to do the work for them
  • Anyone not willing to be honest about where they actually stand

Need hands-on help, not coaching?

Some clients don't need a program. They need someone in the room. Matt offers fractional and project-based consulting for finance and analytics leaders who want direct help building the systems, not just the roadmap. Think close process redesign, reporting infrastructure builds, or team capability assessments.
